The production of content and moderation

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Two recent NYT articles have proved interesting in the role of the user as the content creator (2006, Brought to You by You) and how the effort of moderation comes into play (YouTube Adds a Layer of Filtering to Be a Little Nicer).

The new sites that are smart will understand that their benefit is not to create the content, but to enable the best possible place for users to contribute and consume. Can CBS and YouTube control the voice of the users, that is still to be seen. The challenge lies in how to enable the community to gain their own sense of content ownership, whether through providing an authentic conversation in comments or enabling the user as the moderator, not the brand or site owner.
